Overview

The Pikey Peak Trek is a relatively short but stunning trek located in the lower Everest region of Nepal. It offers trekkers a chance to witness breathtaking views of the Himalayas, including the peaks of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, without the crowds typically associated with the Everest Base Camp Trek. Pikey Peak itself, standing at 4,065 meters, offers one of the most panoramic views of the Himalayas in the region. The trek also provides a cultural experience, passing through traditional Sherpa villages, monasteries, and ancient Buddhist stupas, making it a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion.

The trek usually begins with a drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead and takes around 7-11 days to complete, depending on the pace and itinerary chosen. It is a relatively easier trek compared to other Everest region treks, making it an ideal option for those with limited time or those seeking a more peaceful trekking experience. Himalayan Escape Adventure ensures that trekkers are well-equipped and guided throughout their journey, allowing for an enjoyable and safe trekking experience in this less-visited but beautiful region of Nepal.

Pikey Peak Trekking Permits
To trek in the Pikey Peak region, trekkers are required to obtain a few permits. The main permit is the Sagarmatha National Park Permit, which is mandatory for trekking in areas that are part of the Everest region. In addition to the national park permit, trekkers also need the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card, which helps to register trekkers and ensure safety on the trail. Both of these permits can be arranged by Himalayan Escape Adventure before you start your trek, ensuring that all the necessary documentation is taken care of.

Since the Pikey Peak Trek lies outside the main trekking routes like the Everest Base Camp, it is often less crowded, but it still requires proper permits for conservation and monitoring purposes. Himalayan Escape Adventure takes care of all the permit formalities and ensures that your trek is in compliance with the local regulations, allowing you to focus on the beauty and serenity of the trek without worrying about the logistics.

Pikey Peak Trekking Difficulty
The Pikey Peak Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some prior trekking experience. The trek does not involve extreme altitude gains, with the highest point being Pikey Peak at 4,065 meters, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness. The trail involves gradual ascents and descents through varied terrain, including forest paths, ridgelines, and open grasslands. While the trekking conditions are relatively easier compared to higher altitude treks like Everest Base Camp, the trek can still be physically demanding due to the long walking hours, uneven paths, and occasional steep sections.

Despite being less strenuous than other Everest region treks, the Pikey Peak Trek requires a good level of endurance, especially on days with longer trekking hours. For most trekkers in good health, this trek is achievable and rewarding. Himalayan Escape Adventure ensures that you are well-prepared for the challenges by providing experienced guides, acclimatization breaks, and expert advice on maintaining a steady pace. With proper guidance and planning, the trek becomes a memorable and fulfilling experience.

Best Time for Pikey Peak Trek
The best time for the Pikey Peak Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is typically clear and stable, providing stunning views of the Himalayas and surrounding landscapes. The spring season brings blooming rhododendron forests, making the trek even more beautiful, while the autumn season offers crystal-clear skies and perfect visibility of the snow-capped peaks. These seasons are considered ideal for trekking in Nepal due to moderate temperatures and minimal risk of rain or snow, ensuring a comfortable trekking experience.

While the Pikey Peak Trek can be undertaken year-round, the winter months (December to February) can be quite cold, with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures at higher altitudes, which might make the trek challenging. The summer monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall, which could make trails slippery and pose a risk of landslides. Therefore, for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience, Himalayan Escape Adventure recommends undertaking the Pikey Peak Trek in spring or autumn when the weather is most favorable.

Today is free for you to explore Kathmandu’s cultural highlights. If you’re interested, you can join a guided tour to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the historic Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), the revered Pashupatinath Temple, and the peaceful Boudhanath Stupa. In the afternoon, we will meet to finalize our trek preparations, check your gear, and answer any questions you may have. This day also gives you time to adjust to the altitude before starting the trek.

After an early breakfast, we will start our scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap Bazaar. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours and offers beautiful views of terraced fields, rivers, and traditional villages as we wind our way into the Solu region. Dhap Bazaar is a charming village perched at a higher elevation, offering the perfect place to rest and prepare for the trek. Tonight, we will stay in a local teahouse and get some rest before beginning our adventure.

Today marks the first day of trekking. After breakfast, we begin our trek from Dhap Bazaar, walking through lush forests and small Sherpa villages. The trail offers excellent views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Although the ascent is gentle, the terrain can be a little steep in sections. We reach Jhapre by the end of the day, a peaceful village with a perfect vantage point to view the distant peaks. We’ll rest here for the night, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the region.

After a hearty breakfast, we continue our trek upwards to Pikey Peak Base Camp. The trail today ascends gradually, and we pass through dense forests of rhododendron and oak, enjoying the cool mountain air and the serenity of nature. As we gain altitude, the views of the surrounding mountains, including Everest and Kanchenjunga, start to reveal themselves. After a 5-6 hour trek, we reach the base camp, where we’ll stay for the night in a local lodge.

Today is the highlight of the trek as we summit Pikey Peak at 4,065 meters. The early morning hike up the peak rewards us with a breathtaking panoramic view of some of the highest mountains in the world, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. After soaking in the spectacular views, we descend to Jasmane Bhanjyang, a village located at 3,549 meters. This descent offers a chance to relax after the exciting summit day while enjoying the peaceful mountain environment.

Today’s trek is a bit longer as we descend towards the village of Junbesi. The trail passes through verdant forests, picturesque villages, and terraced fields, offering a glimpse of the daily life of the Sherpa people. Junbesi is a beautiful village known for its traditional stone houses and peaceful atmosphere. We’ll spend the night here, enjoying a well-deserved rest after the challenging days of the trek.

Today is a rest day in Junbesi, but there’s plenty to see and do. You can take a short hike to visit the renowned Thuptenchholing Monastery, located above the village. The monastery offers not only spiritual insights but also fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Alternatively, you can explore other Everest viewpoints or simply relax in Junbesi and enjoy the serene beauty of the area. This rest day is essential for acclimatization before continuing our journey.

Today, we make our way towards Phaplu, a small town in the Solu Khumbu region. The trail is mostly downhill, passing through forests, fields, and small villages. The hike is relatively easy, and it takes about 4-5 hours to reach Phaplu, which is also the location of an airstrip. Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the village and interact with the locals. This will be our last stop before returning to Kathmandu, where we will rest and prepare for the final leg of our journey.

After breakfast, we will drive back to Kathmandu from Phaplu. The journey takes approximately 8 hours, and along the way, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the scenic drive through villages, terraced fields, and the beautiful countryside. Once back in Kathmandu, you can relax and unwind. This evening, we will have a celebratory dinner to mark the end of our trek and reflect on the unforgettable experiences we’ve shared together.

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, we will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey. If you have extra time, you can explore more of Kathmandu or do some last-minute shopping.
