This morning, you’ll board a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, a small town located in the eastern part of Nepal. The flight offers scenic views of the lower hills and the beginning of the Himalayan range. Upon arrival in Bhadrapur, you’ll be transferred to a local hotel for an overnight stay. Take some time to relax, as the trek starts in earnest tomorrow.
After breakfast, you’ll drive from Bhadrapur to Taplejung, the main gateway to the Kanchenjunga region. The trekking part of your adventure begins today as you leave Sekathum and head towards Amjilasa. The trail climbs gradually through dense forests of rhododendron and oak. Along the way, you may encounter local villagers going about their daily activities. After several hours of walking, you will reach Amjilasa, a peaceful village where you will stay overnight.
Today’s trek takes you from Amjilasa to Gyabla, located at 2725 meters. The trail gradually ascends through beautiful forests, offering glimpses of wildlife such as the Himalayan tahr. As you approach Gyabla, the views of the surrounding mountains and valleys begin to open up. Gyabla is a small Sherpa village, providing a serene environment for an overnight stay.
You’ll continue your trek today from Gyabla to Ghunsa, situated at an altitude of 3415 meters. The trail meanders through forests, with occasional views of the Kanchenjunga range and other neighboring peaks. Ghunsa is a larger village, and you will be able to experience Tibetan culture, as many locals are of Tibetan origin. Here, you will rest for the night, preparing for the higher altitudes ahead.
To help with acclimatization, today is a rest day in Ghunsa. You can take a short hike to Ghunsa Ree (3-4 hours), a nearby ridge that offers stunning panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and other peaks. After a restful day in Ghunsa, you will begin the ascent to Kambachen at 4145 meters. Today’s trek takes you from Kambachen to Lonak, a high-altitude location at 4792 meters. The higher you go, the more spectacular the scenery becomes, with towering mountains such as Kanchenjunga and Jannu in the distance. Upon arrival at Lonak, you will stay in a basic lodge.
This is the highlight of your trek, as you will reach the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, located at 5143 meters. The trail is steep and challenging, but the reward is immense. Upon reaching the base camp, you’ll be surrounded by panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga massif and other surrounding peaks. Spend some time at the base camp, taking in the awe-inspiring scenery, before descending back to Lonak for the night.
